Gunbar is situated 100km north west of Griffith and 50km west of Hillston in Central New South Wales. Tiarra (Gunbar’s outstation) is located 130km north west of Hillston and 70km east of Ivanhoe which puts the two stations around 150km apart.

The stations are run in conjunction with each other and staff go to Tiarra at busy times of the year like shearing, lamb marking and crutching.

The two stations are quite different. Gunbar can experience a 350mm rainfall and covers an area of 60,000ha of very flat and mostly open country. This country includes scattered Box swamps with much denser timber and Lignum along the river frontage to the Lachlan. The country ranges from red clay loam to heavy black soil on the river. Gunbar breeds 1,000 Merino rams for company stations each year. Fully stocked, Gunbar carries 26,000 sheep into shearing and additionally runs 1,000 head of Shorthorn cattle. Gunbar has 400ha of country ready for irrigation when water allocation is available from the Lachlan river, along with 160ha of dry land farming where grain is produced for station feed purposes.

Tiarra is in an area of 275mm rainfall covering an area of 52,000ha. It is situated on rolling hill country covered with open areas of Saltbush to areas of thick Mallee scrub and areas of Box timber and Pine stands. Tiarra shears around 18,000 sheep. There are two permanent staff at Tiarra and around eight at Gunbar.

With Gunbar relatively close to Hillston, Hay and Griffith there are many extracurricular activities to participate in throughout the year including football, cricket and other social events.
