Gunbar is situated 100km’s north west of Griffith and 50km’s west of Hillston in Central NSW. Tiarra is located 130 km’s north west of Hillston and 70km’s east of Ivanhoe which puts the two stations around 150 km’s apart.
The stations are run in conjunction with each other with staff going to Tiarra at busy
times of the year eg. Shearing, lambmarking and crutching.
The two stations are quite different with Gunbar on a 350mm rainfall covering an area of 60000 ha, very flat and mostly open country with scattered Box swamps, and much denser timber and Lignum along the river frontage to the Lachlan, the country rangesfrom red clay loam to heavy black soil on the river. Gunbar breeds 1000 Merino rams for company stations each year. Fully stocked Gunbar carries 26000 sheep into shearing and additionally runs 1000 head of shorthorn cattle. Gunbar has 400 ha of country ready for irrigation when water allocation is available from the Lachlan river, along with 160 ha of dry land farming for grain production for station feed purposes.
Tiarra is in an area of 275mm rainfall covering an area of 52000 ha. it is rolling hill
country covered with open areas of salt bush to areas of thick Mallee scrub and areas of Box timber and pine stands. Tiarra shears around 18000 sheep.
We have two permanent staff at Tiarra and around eight at Gunbar.
With Gunbar relatively close to Hillston, Hay and Griffith there are many things to do
including football, cricket and other social events to attend throughout the year.
